Project Background and Highlights

 

Background: The Glastonbury Surgery Center (GSC) project is a joint venture/investment by Hartford Hospital and a group of orthopedic surgeons. The project involves constructing and fitting out an ambulatory surgery center located in Glastonbury, CT, adjacent to Hartford.

The Project: GSC will be a free standing surgery center that will provide outpatient orthopedic surgery. It has been the experience of Hartford Hospital and the surgeons that many of their patients are interested in having routine procedures available in a local setting outside of the hospital environment. The goal of the Center is to provide high quality, safe patient care with easy access in a comfortable environment. The physicians involved in the project all have active privileges at Hartford Hospital. They will continue to perform procedures at Hartford Hospital for inpatients and those outpatients who prefer to have their procedures performed in a hospital setting. The physicians are currently performing 1,370 outpatient and 390 inpatient procedures per year. They are actively recruiting additional surgeons and are projected to be at 1,700 outpatient cases per year the first year in operation.

The Facility and Location: The GSC will be housed in a new 12,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility equipped with three operating suites. The building will be a two-story structure in which the GSC will occupy the entire first floor. The second floor will be leased out to physician owners for offices in addition to space for a Hartford Hospital owned laboratory. The facility will be located in the Gateway Medical Office Park.

The Gateway Medical Office Park has been created over the past three years and its five buildings are 97% occupied. Upon completion of the sixth building, the office park will contain 125,000 square feet of space devoted to providing medical services. Hartford Hospital and its affiliates occupy much of this space.

The Partnership: GSC will be 50% owned by Hartford Hospital and 50% owned by owner physicians. A Board made up of individuals representing the respective owners will govern the project and make all policy decisions.

The Management Company: The day-to-day operations of GSC will be managed by an on-site Administrator provided by Healthcare Venture Professionals (HVP). HVP is a professional management company that specializes in Ambulatory Surgery Centers and has worked with similar clients throughout the Country. Their services include feasibility analysis, consulting, development and long-term management. HVP has also assisted Hartford Hospital and GSC in developing the project.
