Adding Specialities to an Existing ASC

Deerpath Ambulatory Surgery Center (DASC) is a joint venture ASC between Morris Hospital and Rezin Orthopedic Group located in Morris, IL. The 7,100-square-foot ASC contains two state-of-the-art operating rooms. All surgeons with staff privileges have been carefully credentialed and have privileges at both DASC and Morris Hospital. The Center is state licensed, Medicare approved and AAAHC accredited.

DASC has an enthusiastic staff of highly qualified nurses, techs, and Board-Certified anesthesiologists with extensive background and expertise in outpatient surgery.

DASC was originally a 100% physician-owned specializing in Orthopedics and Podiatry. In 2012, Morris Hospital reached an agreement with the DASC to become a hospital joint venture partner in the ASC. Business remained steady and profitable over the next 5 years and in 2017 there became a need within the community for additional services such as ENT, Ophthalmology, and GI. A major hospital renovation to add these services would have been extremely costly so the decision was made by the DASC board to expand these services within the ASC.

HVP Effect

To address the need, DASC Board Executives searched for management professionals with a reputation for effective management and a proven track record for adding new specialties to an ASC. Our company, Healthcare Venture Professionals (HVP), was selected because of our established successes with many other clients and our ability to develop, manage, and grow ASCs efficiently.

HVP began managing DASC in April 2018 and immediately went to work on creating a strategy to grow DASC. “In order to add specialties to an ASC, we want the right team with the right attitude.” said Chuck Owen, managing partner of HVP. “We focused on streamlining internal processes and re-shaping the management team to become more efficient and effective.”

With a streamlined ASC in full operation, HVP quickly turned its focus towards attracting new physicians to DASC with the help of Morris Hospital and Rezin Orthopedics.

Current State Results

In less than one year, DASC started offering Ophthalmology (July) and GI (August). ENT is slated to come on board before the end of 2018 with Urology and General Surgery following in early to mid-2019.

In addition to the new specialties, HVP played an integral part in a space redesign to help streamline the OR rooms to accommodate multiple specialties in a single day.
